InternetNZ welcomes focus on Telecom variation request

27 Jul 2010

InternetNZ (Internet New Zealand Inc) is heartened by the media coverage given to submissions relating to Telecom’s request for a fourth variation to the Operational Separation Undertakings.

InternetNZ Chief Executive Vikram Kumar says coverage of the views of TUANZ, Vodafone and Vector indicate there are a number of perspectives on the substantive details of the request, and healthy debate is to be encouraged.

“Ultimately, multiple points of view will help lead to a better outcome for New Zealanders. We look forward to reading the other submissions when Government makes them publicly available.

“This is the first InternetNZ submission on Telecom’s requests for variations and my biggest concern was that it would slip through unnoticed.

“We encourage public debate and scrutiny of Telecom’s request for a fourth variation, its impact on operational separation and on the process around the Government’s ultra-fast broadband initiative. Improvement in broadband services and prices for New Zealanders should not be undermined by slipping in changes through variations to the existing Undertakings. That isn’t in the Government’s or public’s interest.
