Security, Openness, Accessibility and Diversity key to Internet Best Practice Awards

InternetNZ (Internet New Zealand Inc) and Australian domain name administrator AuDA advise that the deadline is fast approaching for the second Australia and New Zealand Internet Best Practice Awards.

This annual competition recognises groups or individuals who have embraced the challenge of making the Internet a secure, open, accessible or diverse experience for everyone who uses it.

Disconnection must go, says InternetNZ

InternetNZ (Internet New Zealand Inc) today made a presentation to Parliament's Commerce Select Committee, explaining its detailed submission on the Copyright (Infringing File Sharing) Amendment Bill and issuing a strong call for disconnection to be removed as a penalty.

Echoing the majority of Internet industry submitters, InternetNZ Policy Director Jordan Carter says "disconnection needs to be removed from this Bill. It needs to go on pragmatic and on principled grounds".

InternetNZ announces Council election results and new Fellows

InternetNZ (Internet New Zealand Inc) announces official results in this year's InternetNZ Council elections and the appointment of two new InternetNZ Fellows.

Interim election results were announced at InternetNZ’s Annual General Meeting last night, with final results now confirmed. There were 12 nominations for five vacancies on Council. Official results are as follows:

Don Christie and Lance Wiggs have been elected to Councillor positions. Jonny Martin and Neil James have been re-elected to their Councillor positions. All will serve a three-year term.

InternetNZ welcomes focus on Telecom variation request

InternetNZ (Internet New Zealand Inc) is heartened by the media coverage given to submissions relating to Telecom’s request for a fourth variation to the Operational Separation Undertakings.

InternetNZ Chief Executive Vikram Kumar says coverage of the views of TUANZ, Vodafone and Vector indicate there are a number of perspectives on the substantive details of the request, and healthy debate is to be encouraged.

Minister should say “no” to Telecom – InternetNZ

InternetNZ (Internet New Zealand Inc) strongly opposes Telecom’s request for a fourth variation to the Undertakings that operationally separate the company, arguing that it would effectively end the benefits that operational separation has brought about.

Policy Director Jordan Carter says “the operational separation of Telecom into three units able to operate in a standalone manner was a key plank of the 2006 amendments to the Telecommunications Act. A staged implementation over several years from 2008 is now under way.

.nz domain names with macrons to launch next week

The beginning of next week marks an exciting new phase for the .nz domain name space. From 10.30am on Monday 26 July 2010, people will be able to register .nz domain names using the macronised vowels ā, ē, ī, ō and ū.

Registering a .nz domain name with macrons will take place in exactly the same way as registering any other .nz domain name – through a ‘registrar’ - and registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

InternetNZ announces funding for Computer Clubhouse New Zealand

InternetNZ (Internet New Zealand Inc) is pleased to announce that it has granted $42,000 in funding to Computer Clubhouse New Zealand.

The Computer Clubhouse initiative exposes adolescents from underserved communities across New Zealand to computing and Internet technologies. Youth make use of state-of-the-art technology and work with adult mentors to develop vocational skills and build self-confidence.

InternetNZ Chief Executive Vikram Kumar says the work of the Clubhouse is squarely aligned with InternetNZ’s objective to promote access to the Internet widely.

2010 Australia and New Zealand Internet Best Practice Awards - Entries Open

InternetNZ (Internet New Zealand Inc) and .auda (the Australian Domain Name Administrator) are pleased to announce that entries in the 2010 Australia and New Zealand Internet Best Practice Awards are now open.

The Awards recognise New Zealand and Australian-based organisations, businesses, groups and individuals that have made significant contributions towards the security, openness, diversity and accessibility of the internet.

The award categories are based on the four main themes of the United Nations' Internet Governance Forum (IGF). The categories are:
