About InternetNZ

Who is InternetNZ?InternetNZ panel session

InternetNZ (Internet New Zealand Inc.) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting and promoting the Internet in New Zealand and fostering a coordinated, cooperative approach to its ongoing development.

Our primary objective is “high performance and unfettered access for all” so the Internet continues to operate in an open environment that cannot be captured by any entity or individual for their own ends. Through consultation with our membership of Internet service providers (ISPs), academics, public information groups and Internet users, we provide comment and advice to politicians, industry influencers and the media.

The InternetNZ Mandate

Our mandate to manage the .nz domain name space and advocate for the interests of the local Internet community is based upon:

  • InternetNZ is a not-for-profit, charitable society that is open and transparent. Anyone is welcome to join the Society.
  • The Society is governed by a Council elected by its membership.
  • The .nz delegation is assigned to InternetNZ by ICANN with the consent of the local Internet community.
  • InternetNZ has effectively managed the .nz delegation since 1996.
  • The Objects of InternetNZ are focused on the protection and promotion of the Internet, for the benefit of the local Internet community.
  • InternetNZ provides leadership in addressing issues that confront the future of the Internet, for the benefit of the local Internet community.

.nz Domain

InternetNZ represents New Zealand at a global level through the delegation on the .nz country code, which is a top level domain. Its role is to ensure there’s a fair and competitive market for .nz registrars and that the domain is operated to best industry practices, meeting the needs of those who register. InternetNZ oversees the management of the .nz domain name space through a wholly-owned subsidiary, the Domain Name Commission Limited. It also operates the .nz register through its ownership of the New Zealand Domain Name Registry Limited, trading as NZ Registry Services (NZRS).
